Finally good news for Chelsea? Conte’s new deal is pointless

You’d think a side that finished Premier League champions, winning 30 games out of 38, would be able to handle the summer transfer window but Chelsea have been disastrous so far.

The arrivals of Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko don’t strengthen the depth at Antonio Conte’s disposal as Asmir Begovic, John Terry, Nathaniel Chalobah and Nathan Ake have already left, whilst Nemanja Matic and Diego Costa look set to join them in leaving the club.

Chelsea desperately need a top-class striker to replace the outgoing Diego Costa but they missed out on Romelu Lukaku’s services to Manchester United, whilst also seeing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang disappear on the market.

It leaves Chelsea facing a lot of work to do before the Premier League season kicks-off in just a few weeks time but there has at least been some positive news filtering out of Stamford Bridge, with the club confirming Conte has penned a new contract, although it’s not all as good as it seems.

Apart from giving Conte more money, the new contract doesn’t really change much as the two-year deal doesn’t hand an extension to the three-year contract he penned upon his arrival last summer- meaning he could still be snatched by Inter Milan at some stage during the next 12 months.

If the Blues are to retain Conte, a man who is key to their quest to climb to the summit of European football once again, then Roman Abramovich needs to remember where he put his credit card and give the Italian boss money to spend in the market.

As it stands, Chelsea will struggle to keep pace with both Manchester sides and could face further problems with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham also looking solid, whilst a newly-drafted Everton side could also challenge them.

If Chelsea don’t strengthen significantly, then they have no chance of retaining their Premier League crown and they can probably kiss goodbye to Champions League football too.
