PGA Tour winner to skip The Open because of his sister

Billy Hurley III has decided to withdraw from The Open at Royal Troon because of his sister. Family is clearly very important to Hurley and so it was a no brainer that a wedding would come before a tournament.

After winning the Quicken Loans National this past week, one of the perks was an exemption from The Open. Unfortunately his sister’s wedding will take place the Saturday of The Open, July 17th, in Virginia.

“I wouldn’t miss my sister’s wedding for the world, and I think at this point in time for me and my family and the trajectory of our family, it’s very important for me to be there to support her and her new husband,” Hurley said Tuesday in his pre-tournament press conference for the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational. “It was a pretty easy decision at the end of the day.”

He said his sister was in tears when he told her he would attend her wedding over The Open. I’m sure in that moment he knew he had made the right decision.

Billy will be competing this week at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational alongside Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, and many more top players.
