Dustin Johnson: “Please don’t give me Mickelson at Ryder Cup”

Dustin Johnson makes a public plea to Davis Love III and states that he does not want to be paired with Phil Mickelson.

What a curious announcement to make just a week before the Ryder Cup.

“I think I can partner pretty well with pretty much anyone, except for Phil,” world No 2 Johnson told reporters on the eve of the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

“Me and Phil don’t partner well together,” added Johnson, “we play well against each other,” I love Phil and we’re great friends but we have a lot more fun when we’re playing against each other than when we’re partners.”

No, no, no.

This doesn’t ride well with me, you don’t comment on selection, that’s the captain’s job. You get paired with someone and that’s that; if you don’t like it, lump it. Every player will have their opinion on who they should and shouldn’t be playing with, but it’s not your job to offer an opinion.

America’s build-up just seems so unnecessary. I think leaving it to the 11th hour to pick your final player is pointless, stupid and corrosive to the team. What a distraction this whole protracted process has become.  It’s about time America cut the crap. Why not copy Europe’s formula, you know the one that’s won 6 of the last 7 Ryder Cups, and pick all your players long in advance.

Instead, we watch as players are left guessing, uncertain about who will be joining them at Hazeltine. The worst thing about all of this is the “task force” that has been assembled to make the selection decisions.

No, no, no.

Grow a pair Davis and do it yourself…like a captain. Delegating responsibility for what is ultimately the most important part of captaincy is weak.  Why complicate matters? The Europeans know the deal, keep it simple stupid! Watching the American players jump to Bubba Watson’s defence is pathetic. How has it come to this, 7 days to go and the players are being asked about the final pick.

Steve Rogers, is that you?
Steve Rogers, is that you?

America should be unleashing a series of passive aggressive threats, they should be telling the media how they plan to beat Europe, not answering dumb questions about their attitude towards Bubba

As Jason Day summarised: “If America doesn’t win, I wonder what’ll happen to that task force?” I’ll tell you what will happen Jason, the task force will be shelved next to all the other needlessly flawed concepts the US Ryder Cup team have trialed. KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID.
