Bubba Watson’s behaviour has shocked us to the core

Bubba Watson is a polarising figure and there’s nothing that will change this. Having said that, his behavior over the last couple of weeks has been astonishing.

I don’t have many good words to say about Bubba, he’s just not my cup of tea. However, he’s been nothing but dignified throughout this whole protracted selection process.

Let’s not forget that he’s 7th in the world, meaning a selection snub would place him in the history books. He would become the highest ranked player to miss out on Ryder Cup selection, since 1979.

Web Simpson, one of many players who doesn’t get along with Bubba.

Many people think Bubba will get the final pick. I don’t. He’s one of the worst putters on TOUR – an essential trait for Ryder Cup success – and his style doesn’t blend well with other players. There is no question that an exclusion will hurt him, such is the nature of these exceptional circumstances. What a harsh reality for the man who put his heart and soul into the Olympic project.

I’m not going to kick Bubba whilst he’s down. The man is deeply misunderstood. He’s socially uncomfortable and this tends to manifest itself in moments of idiocy.

This is what Bubba had to say:

You know, we all want to be there,” “We all want to be a part of the team. Like I said in an interview yesterday, I want to be a part of the team. I sent (Love) a text that said, ‘Can I be assistant captain if you don’t pick me?’ So I put it out there. I want to be a part of the team no matter what.”

Every fibre in his being must be aching to say something outlandish. I doff my hat to the man for breaking convention and remaining diplomatic.
