In the Rory McIlroy-Erica Stoll relationship narrative, how big a role do you think the two assign to fate? I mean, come on, how often do you think Rory gets confused about the time zone he’s in?

If you remember, Stoll was working as something of a liaison for the PGA of America during the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah. McIlroy, mixed up about what time he had to be at the course, had to call Stoll to set up a police escort to get him to to the track for his tee time. Ah, the seeds of love.

Of course, Wozilroy was still a thing at that point, and the pair (McIlstoll?) didn’t officially get together for a couple of years. They’ve been engaged since December of 2015 and are expected to make their marriage Facebook official in Ireland after the Masters.

Anyway, In the second part of a chat with the Irish Independent‘s Paul Kimmage, Rory McIlroy shed some light on why the relationship works for them.

“The thing I love about it…is that we were friends before anything romantic happened. We met when she was working for the PGA of America, and renting a condo in Palm Beach, and I found it refreshing being with someone who was living a normal life rather than, ‘Oh! My jet is 30 minutes late!’

“I thought at the time that being with someone that was in a similar position to you was the obvious answer. But it isn’t, because you can never get away from it. You can never detach yourself and try to come back to the real world. And that’s why I feel in such a good place now. I don’t feel Erica wants to change me in any way. I can be myself around her; there’s no bulls—, no acting, no show.”

“I love that [Stoll] knows everything about me, and there was no judgment there. There was no judgment from day one, which is huge, because that’s very hard to find for someone in my position.”

Interesting. The takeaway, apparently, celebrities: Get you a girl who understands your specific sphere of fame but isn’t famous herself.
