Time to thank 2 Fast 2 Furious for the Nissan Skyline GT-R R34

That stare of seduction from Eva Mendes coupled with Ludacris’ white overalls and afro combination, partnered by the orgasmic sound of Paul Walker’s Nissan Skyline GT-R R34, was vintage Fast And Furious.

Over the top? Yep. Inaccurate performance? Of course. But who cares? Exactly.

The iconic Nissan Skyline actually had to be altered in order to perform the required burnouts – but there’s not a petrol head out there who will mind those inaccuracies because this love affair knows no boundaries.

Sure, it wasn’t the first Skyline to appear on our movie screens in the Fast & Furious franchise, but being first doesn’t mean being iconic.

And sure, it lasted just a handful of minutes before it was seized by the police. But those fleeting moments are sometimes all you need (like when you realise there’s leftover pizza in the fridge).

Thankfully, despite a brief cameo, the car is the one long associated with Brian O’Connor, and that has a lot to do with the GT-R’s unbelievable HICAS rear-steering system which is so wonderfully displayed in the opening scenes of 2 Fast 2 Furious.

The beauty of this car – and the Fast & Furious films in general – taps into that inner-child that lives on in all the petrol heads out there; driving was always something you never thought you’d achieve, believing that you were forever destined to just drive toy cars off the edge of your dining room table.

It’s elaborate, cliche and just not practical. But you know what? We are all absolutely fine with that. And don’t pretend you don’t recreate this car every time you take one to the garage to be ‘done up’ in Grand Theft Auto.

Six Skylines were bought to use for the production of the film – *drools* – and it is with a heavy heart to report that three were smashed to smithereens, whilst two had their heart ripped out and were sold for parts. And the final one? Well, that was kept for potential sequels (and boy there were sequels) – perhaps it’s the one that Paul Walker had in his own personal collection before his tragic passing?

Nissan Skyline GT-R R34’s greatest achievement will forever be the unification of car lovers and those who only describe cars by their colour; no easy task, but if there was going to be one four-wheeled beauty up to the task, it was always going to be her.

The Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 is so perfect, in fact, that we are willing to forgive Nissan for refusing to sell the model in the United States.

Never stop making Fast & Furious films. Ever.
