Michelle Wie has emergency surgery to remove appendix

Michelle Wie’s 2017 golf season has certainly kept her on her toes. The most popular name on the LPGA was ushered to the operation table on Sunday afternoon to have her appendix removed.

Wie issued a statement through the LPGA after she was forced to withdraw from the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open.

The 27-year-old was only six shots off the lead held by both Mo Martin and Nicole Broch Larsen. It’s quite a shame as Wie, ranked 30th in the world, has played some of her most impressive golf this season with seven Top-10 finishes in 17 starts. Just last week she played a role in the U.S. Solheim Cup team’s victory, their second win in as many years.

Not only was Wie showing off some impressive style at the Solheim Cup, but she also continued her bromance with playing partner Danielle Kang.

This isn’t the first injury to plague Wie this season. She was forced to withdraw from the U.S. Women’s Open at Trump National Bedminster because of muscle spasms in her neck.

On Monday morning Wie updated her fans through social media, assuring them that she was fine and on the road to recovery. She also gave thanks to the Ottawa surgeons for performing the emergency procedure.

Even though she only has four wins on the LPGA Tour – including one Major victory at the 2014 Women’s U.S. Open – Wie is still considered the Tiger Woods of the women’s circuit. Like Woods, Wie rose to stardom from an early age. By age 12 (2002) Wie was competing in professional events. She complied 17 professional starts before turning pro in 2005 at the age of 15.

Despite not being as dominant as Woods was, Wie still attracts a large following thanks in part to her ability to market herself off the course. Using her charisma and natural beauty, she gives sponsors like Nike golf a face for their brand.

Nike, the LPGA, and the rest of the golf world will patiently wait for Michelle Wie to return to the Tour and hopefully finish out the season. There is not an official time table yet on Wie’s recovery, but until then she will be resting and hopefully combatting any hangriness.
