FedEx Cup: Making Headlines Off The Course

It’s that glorious time of the year as the weather cools down, making it the perfect temperature for golf and the FedEx Cup playoffs. This year’s playoffs couldn’t have started any better, not even Hollywood would top the script for the first of four tournaments.

The two men leading the field in FedEx Cup points Dustin Johnson (1) and Jordan Spieth (2) went into a playoff this past Sunday. One one hand you have Johnson who is looking to regain the momentum he had in the beginning of the season before his injury during Masters week. Then, on the other hand, you have Spieth in a semi-revival year after his meltdown at the 2016 Masters but has come back to form by adding a third Major to his mantle before the age of 24.

Spieth opened up a wide-open door for Johnson after carding a double-bogey on the sixth hole to drop his five-shot lead to three shots. Johnson would seal the deal in their playoff with the gustiest/aggressive tee shot we have seen in a while.

This tournament finish leads us into our first whacky news story of the week from the PGA Tour:

Jordan Spieth trolling the PGA Tour’s Instagram

First off, you have to love how active these guys are on social media these days. This is the funniest thing we’ve seen Spieth do off the course because we are usually chuckling at his commentary of his own game.

Don’t get this confused with being malicious, either. This is a guy who is a competitor. He is simply letting us all know that he is ready for the next tournament of the playoffs.

Plus it’s like having that one friend in your golfing foursome who won’t let his game-winning shot/putt go at the 19th hole.

“We get it, buddy, let’s talk about something else now….” – Jordan Spieth (kind of).

Rory McIlroy better get ready for some Bean Town Boos

The next tournament for the FedEx Cup playoffs will be the Dell Technologies Championship played at TPC Boston. But Rory made a huuuge mistake this week, leading up to this tournament.

McIlroy was caught wearing a Yankees hat while in New York which sort of makes sense, but he is definitely not playing his cards right with the Boston faithful that will turn out for the event. They will probably give him the same look that little girl is giving him in the picture.

For the second year in a row, McIlroy made an equipment change at the Northern Trust Open. Last year he switched putters, which helped him win the FedEx Cup. This time he has switched his putter to a TP Mullen model and added a new set of irons by Taylormade.

Dustin Johnson scores brownie points with Wayne Gretzky

Dustin Johnson earned himself major brownie points with his girlfriend’s dad, the G.O.A.T. of the NHL, Wayne Gretzky. Johnson repped the hockey hall-of-famer with a club-head cover this past weekend.

An unprecedented power move by Mr. Dustin Johnson which was made that much better when he sealed the deal with a win on Sunday.
