Football is a dangerous game, not just for those who play it, but for all parties involved. We’ve seen refs go down with injuries, coaches hit on the sidelines, and occasionally, ball boys end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. During the Vikings’ Monday Night victory over the New Orleans Saints, Stefon Diggs punted the ball directly into a ball boy after scoring a touchdown. Watch for yourself:
Why the ballboy thought running into the end zone right after his team scored a touchdown was a good idea remains to be seen. They say “x marks the spot” but this time, it was the giant “K” plastered across the ball boy’s vest that served as coordinates.
This isn’t the first time a non-combatant has been accidentally victimized during an NFL game. Far from it. In fact, in the canon of Vikings players accidentally hitting staffers, this ball boy incident barely registers on the Richter scale. Check out this poor Fox sound guy who tried to run across the mouth of the tunnel as the Vikings were taking the field:
Rupert Murdoch might have felt that one all the way in Australia, the way that lineman hit that sound guy with the pancake block. Headphones aren’t gonna protect you from big number 98, friend. Get your pad game up.
But the staffer (if he is in fact a staffer; what’s he doing on the field, anyways?) who got it worst was backpack kid, who took a torpedo to the face from former New York Giants linebacker Michael Boley. As a defensive player, he doesn’t score often, but boy, did he make it count:
Everyone wants to be down at field level, but as we’ve seen, it’s live action down there. Player or not, you step onto that field and you better be ready for whatever comes your way.
