Skipping Class: Premier League Absentee XI

Reece Chambers

The Premier League season is four games in and there has already been a managerial sacking. Not only that, there have been 10 red cards amongst other antics. But, there is also a whole host of players who have yet to play in the Premier League this season.

Some of these players are out because of injuries, transfer issues or even fitness problems. That in mind, there is a host of talent that is currently out of the game. Whether it is for long or short term reasons, fans cannot wait to see them back on the pitch.

In honesty, some of the players could feature this coming weekend. For instance, Philippe Coutinho could be set to resolve his transfer issues and perform for the Reds again.

GK – Michel Vorm

The Dutch goalkeeper hasn’t made an appearance for Spurs this season. And, just like last season, his chances could be minimal again behind Hugo Lloris. It’s easy to forget the talent of Vorm who shone brightly at Swansea City before becoming a professional bench-warmer for Spurs.

RB – Seamus Coleman

The Irish international suffered a horrific leg break in March versus Wales. He returned to training in early August to step up his rehabilitation and we certainly hope to see Coleman isn’t an absentee for much longer.

CB – Vigil van Dijk

Saints fans must be over the moon that they managed, for now, to keep hold of their prized centre-back. He is currently lacking on match fitness but once he does become available for selection, Southampton will look much more secure at the back.

CB – Chris Smalling

Out of favour or out of form? Smalling started versus Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday night for Mourinho’s side. But, he is yet to feature in the league.

LB – Danny Rose

The England international absentee has been out for a fair amount of time with a knee injury. Though he may have ruffled a few feathers in north London when commenting on Spurs’ lack of transfer business, Pochettino will be happy to see him back in the near future.

RM – Érik Lamela

The Argentine hasn’t featured since last October for Spurs. And, with an unknown return date with a reoccurring hip injury, Spurs fans will have to wait longer to see the forward in action.

CM – Yaya Touré

Issues between Touré and Guardiola mean that he isn’t likely to appear for City anytime soon. The manager’s latest reasoning for Toure’s omission was due to ‘sporting reasons.’ Whilst this is incredibly misleading, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Touré is a major absentee for much of the season.

CM – Santi Cazorla

The 32-year-old isn’t expected to return to competitive action until January next year. His precise passing and intricate dribbling is definitely missed at the Emirates Stadium.

LM – Philippe Coutinho

The Brazilian was at the centre of gossip during the transfer window. But, to the delight of most Liverpool fans – he remains a red. If he is able to replicate last season’s performances, Liverpool will be glad they resisted Barcelona’s lucrative offers.

ST – Diego Costa

Where’s the striker gone? Conte told him he could leave the club at the start of pre-season. But, Atletico were unable to buy the forward and since he has gone awol. It remains to be seen whether he will return to Stamford Bridge but Morata seems to be doing a good job anyway.

ST – Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The Swede signed a one-year contract with United back in August. If he can recover fully from his knee injury and replicate even half of his goal tally from last season, Mourinho may well have his hands on another Premier League title.
