Free Ballin’: Bubba Watson Drops Sponsorship With Volvik

Bubba Watson is a free man now…when it comes to which ball he chooses to play. After a disappointing 2017 season, Watson has dropped Volvik, the company that provided the 2-time Masters Champion with his bright-pink balls over the past year.

Watson will now switch back to Titleist’s ProV1x at this week’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open to kick off his 2018 PGA Tour season.

“My contract is done with Volvik. I do not have a ball deal as we sit here today,” Watson told reporters in Las Vegas. “So I can play with whatever ball I want to. My deal was up, and so I’m ball-free.”

According to Volvik’s website, the company said they had inked Watson to a multi-year deal in the beginning of 2017 to endorse their ‘line of extreme performance golf balls’. The 38-year-old said that he was originally drawn in by the array of colors the company had to offer – he loves his color pink just like Rickie Fowler loves his orange – but was even more intrigued by the ball’s performance when testing it.

Unfortunately for Watson, the ball did not play well in PGA tournaments last season. Watson first used Volvik’s ball in the 2017 SBS Tournament of Champions where he finished 25th. After that, he would go on to miss seven cuts, including The Masters, U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship.

It was the first time in his career that he missed the cut at The Masters, but Watson gets to start fresh with his choice of balls this upcoming season.

“My goals are to be better than that. It was a frustrating year when it came to the golf,” Watson added. “It was a great year off the course, but a frustrating year.”

Volvik ball or not, Watson has been given some pretty good odds to win this week. He’s opening with 35/1 odds per Bovada.lv. Tony Finau was given the best odds to win at 16/1.
