Japan’s Population Is Hiding A Dark Secret

The taboo around watching porn and masturbating has certainly subsided, but that’s not to say your body’s automatic reaction is to still get slightly hot and clammy whenever the subject arises – roughly once every 10 minutes in a lads’ WhatsApp group chat.

But just to avoid the awkwardness now: we do it. And we love it. And you know what? We know you do it, and we know you love it.

And that’s absolutely perfectly normal.

Pornhub is the Nike of the porn website world; it’s the Godfather of getting your ‘fix – and if you can’t find what you’re looking for on Pornhub then that just means you’re into some next level stuff that hasn’t actually been invented as a category yet (don’t worry, no one is judging your here); if anything, you’ve spotted a gap in the market.

The world feels like it’s changing daily, rather than yearly, these days, with barriers continually being broken and revolutionary steps being made in positive and fair directions – unless you’re anything but a white male in America or a 90s kid who wants to get on the housing market.

And the porn industry in no different, with the most searched terms on Pornhub forever changing – 2016 saw a new entry into the top 20 most searched categories, with ‘overwatch’ jumping straight in at 11th place.

Now, the word overwatch has a feeling of an army operation to it, and, if like us prior to diving into the Pornhub stats you had no idea of what ‘overwatch’ meant, then you’ll probably be surprised to learn it’s a game.

Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer online first-person shooter – no, they don’t throw dildos as grenades, or anything like that. It’s popularity is no surprise when you consider that ‘cartoon’ and ‘hentai’ also find themselves in the top 20 most searched categories – 7th and 8th.

This step into the fantasy world of pornography perhaps emphasises the growing detachment so many of us feel from the modern day world. And it’s no surprise that hentai tops the search categories for Japan – although it now makes us feel slightly uncomfortable about watching ‘My Neighbor Totoro’, now.

But is this craving for make-believe porn having a detrimental effect on Japan’s population?

Sure, 0.18% is a small margin, but it’s a decline of 228,780 people, and with the Japanese population predicted to have shrunk by a third come the year 2065, it’s a concern for the Japanese economy.

So, to all our readers currently residing in Japan, shutdown that laptop, go get some air and just get your partner to dress up as Mei from Overwatch, if that’s what gives you your kicks.
