Renault e.Dams: The Story Behind Their Formula E Success

With the new FIA Formula E season fast approaching, Renault e.Dams possess a remarkable monopoly on the Constructors’ Title.

After much speculation, Renault announced that they’ll leave the series at the end of the forthcoming campaign. Subsequently, e.Dams are expected to run the Nissan team due to the alliance of the two manufacturers.

Despite this, Renault can still expect to set the benchmark among the likes of Audi and Jaguar. The e.Dams team will want to increase their accolades so that Nissan won’t fall behind upon their arrival next year.

The Story So Far

The cornerstone of the team’s success evolves around the development of a strong drivetrain which has resulted in bulletproof reliability. This is was proven after the team only suffered only one retirement last season at the Montreal ePrix. Consequently, it’s not shocking to see such impressive statistics in their Formula E record. Across 33 race entries, Renault have recorded 22 podiums; 15 of which were race wins.

This combination of reliability and speed has allowed Buemi to challenge for the championship and has contributed massively towards Renault’s success. Unsurprisingly then, the Swiss driver is feeling confident following the three-day test at Valencia about his chances in Hong Kong:

“I am pleased with these three days, we didn’t have any major issues. 

We were not only focused on the performance of the car, but assessed other areas as well.

We are not very far ahead but we know we can fight for good positions.

We will remain focused until Hong Kong and see what happens there.” – Sebastian Buemi

On the other hand, there is still room for improvement from Nico Prost. The Frenchman failed to finish on the podium last season and ended up sixth in the drivers’ standings, and his consistency was questioned after he failed to compete at the front of the field.

In comparison, Buemi flourished by claiming two poles and six victories.

The Competition

After the three-day test in Valencia, numerous drivers posted similar lap times in their qualifying simulations. Nevertheless, it was Audi who were strongest in their longer runs, making defending champion Lucas di Grassi the early favorite.

Earlier in the year, BMW confirmed rumours that they would bring in additional engineers earlier than planned to the Andretti team ahead of their debut in 2018. The inaugural champion Nelson Piquet Jr. has left NIO to join Mitch Evans at Jaguar, whilst Alex Lynn fills in the vacant seat at the Citroen-backed DS Virgin team alongside Sam Bird.

Andre Lotterer will be undoubtedly be the one to watch in Hong Kong as he partners Jean-Eric Vergne at Techeetah.
