People Should Really Know How to Cook at Least One Dish

Learn to cook! It may seem unnecessary considering that the modern era came fully equipped with delivery services for food of every kind.

A quick call to your local pizzeria and thirty minutes later an awkward 16-year-old boy in the midst of puberty hands you your pizza. As he thanks you for your patronage, his voice cracks and he looks down blushing from embarrassment before running off to his car.

This is pretty standard practice for college kids, bachelors and bachelorettes of all ages, and parents too tired to cook from a long day of work. However, standard practice doesn’t make it a good practice.

Certain situations in life require more than ordering a pizza. Family gatherings around the holidays often demand a home cooked meal, and a good one at that lest the chef face the harsh criticisms that family members are always willing to dish out.

Students in dire straights cannot afford delivery for every meal, and if he or she doesn’t know how to cook, well they may be stuck eating microwaved dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets.

As such, every individual should learn to cook at least some basic dishes and prepackaged ramen and microwave pizzas don’t count.

The following are two easy to make, relatively cheap meals that are respectable enough to serve to your mother.

Tristan’s Breakfast Rice Bowl:

Ingredients-

  1. Swanson Chicken Broth
  2. Uncle Ben’s White Rice
  3. Eggs (Extra Large) (2 eggs per serving)
  4. Breakfast Sausage of Choice (optional)
  5. Cheese of Choice (optional)
  6. Baby Spinach (optional)
  7. Ground Red Pepper
  8. Onion Powder
  9. Black Pepper
  10. 1 Tablespoon of butter

Instructions-

  1. Using the chart on the side of the Uncle Ben’s box, determine how many servings you wish to prepare.
  2. Measure out the appropriate amount of rice and broth as suggested by the box.
  3. Pour both the rice and broth into a medium-large pot and bring to a boil.
  4. Once boiling, add the ground red pepper, onion powder, and black pepper to taste
  5. Lower the temperature to simmer and set a timer for roughly 20 minutes or until the broth is completely absorbed by the rice
  6. While the rice cooks, slice the breakfast sausage into small disks
  7. Get a small-medium nonstick pan, and proceed to cook the sausage on high until both sides of the disk have darkened
  8. Beat the appropriate amount of eggs for the number of servings of rice you are cooking
  9. Once the rice is done cooking, slowly pour it into the saucepan and add 1 tablespoon of butter
  10. Let the butter melt while stirring the rice
  11. Slowly pour the eggs over the rice and sausage mixing the eggs into the rice
  12. Continue to cook the combination until it resembles risotto or wet seeming fried rice
  13. Add cheese and spinach if desired
